about
In “Sunken,” dissonant and melancholic guitars (Burger, Johnson) and bass (Day) wash over minimalist drums (Dravier) in a slow burn, while synth (Clark) melodies meander in the distance while Clark’s restrained vocals beckon empathy and attention. Clocking in at over seven minutes, the listener is rewarded with cathartic feedback- and distortion-driven surges throughout, and the track crescendos with the band in cataract - all the while never breaking the pace of a rolling ocean storm.
The lyrics of “Sunken,” Clark writes, “were drawn from a depth of loneliness that may only be reached through the grip of addiction. The lack of trust in one’s self to do what they know is right for them and the single fear from which all insecurities emerge, abandonment… [it] speaks of a time in which I was stuck underwater watching everyone around me enjoy each other on the surface.”
“All of my relationships were bonded through suffering and fear,” Clark continues, “and ‘Sunken’ acknowledges that the shared pain of addiction is no one’s fault, but a decrepit and evil virus that infects even the best of hearts. I eventually learned that the path to forgiveness for myself began with forgiving others who had succumbed to the poison of drugs, envy, and the music business as a whole, first.”
Shoegaze ist die Kunst des Dröhnens, doch „Everything Is Alive“ setzt diese Elemente nur sparsam ein. Statt Hall- und Zerr-Sounds aufzutürmen, schäumt die Musik in feinen Bläschen über.
